Weaving

What can person with special needs do?

The adult with special needs must have an occupation which should help him economically.
The handloom project at Strategy & Action for Independence Trust in Chennai was an eyeopener.
The young adults with special needs have been trained in the use of the handloom weaving machine specially designed to suit them. They started with weaving a material which was then co
nverted to bags hand painted by one of the parent which was an instant hit among the supporters of the cause.

A finer material was planned and the next product weaved was the kitchen cloth. It was amazing to see the quality of the product produced by these people. The next item produced was handwoven runners and rugs. The initial quantity were small as they were on a trial basis.

A hospital has given orders for the runners which has given a big boost to the morale of the person with special needs. Opportunities like these go a long way to enable and empower such people both economically and socially.
